The Pre-Production Process

We were required to create a 90 second short film for DepicT!, an international web based short film competition that challenges filmmakers to produce a short film in under two minutes. You can find out more about DepicT! here; http://www.depict.org/about/ We used two different ways to distribute our production, initially posting it onto Youtube, a video sharing website. Once we had posted it, each of our team then posted links onto each of our personal social media accounts. Another obvious way to distribute it would be to enter our production into the DepicT! competition. Although we were required to create a short film for this particular project, there are many other mediums in which to create moving images, such as; Feature Films (also known more commonly as a motion picture, movie or just film) - a film with a running time that is long enough to be considered the sole feature to fill a programme. Trailers - a short film containing extracts of a feature film, usually...

DepicT! Video Textual Analysis

For this task, we were assigned groups and had to create a 90 minute short film. We settled upon the idea of a group of friends talking, but one seems to be an outcast (made obvious by always being on the end of or slightly behind the rest of the group, no-one looks at him or speaks to him) and doesn't speak throughout the entire conversation, until upon reflection the group begin to discuss an incident that occurred a few months prior. At this point he tells one of the group that it wasn't his fault, and as his friends stand up and walk away, he remains and begins to fade. Using this effect made it apparent to the audience that he was a ghost, and this subconsciously causes the viewer to realise that he was the friend that was killed in the accident. Camera Use A range of shot types were used throughout our short film, but the most common was a medium close up as this shot type seemed the most appropriate to use when filming the characters talking, and the film is p...

DepicT! Production Diary

12th October 2016 (2 Lessons) In today's lessons our group managed to finish our storyboard for our 90 second short. We went and assessed the location that we are going to film in (park opposite college), took pictures to refer back to when planning and briefly planned how we were going to shoot. We then returned to class and completed a Film Location Recce, outlining potential sound and light issues that we could come across. Finally we began to write the dialogue for our short film. 17th October 2016 (2 Lessons) In today's lessons, we collected all f our paperwork together and completed any paperwork that were still incomplete, for instance location recces, shot list etc. We also completed and typed up our script. 19th October 2016 (2 Lessons) Today, we been filming out 90 second short film. We acquired actors, completed talent releases and began filming at our chosen location. Today, the weather was particularly miserable which gave us a few hazards that ...

My favourite DepicT! Short

'The End' http://www.depict.org/2002/the-end/?category_request=picks&doing_wp_cron=1475495790.1752729415893554687500 This DepicT short called 'The End' really stood out to me as one of the best that I'd seen. It highly interested me as the entire short is shot in one location, with one character, whilst managing to maintain the audience's attention with a humorous story line. The very simple concept is achieved with diegetic sound, and without this the entire story line wouldn't actually exist. The whole short is based upon sound and lighting to create the illusion that every time he moves the globe it triggers the movement of the entire planet, resulting in very dim lighting to represent night, and diegetic synchronous sound of cars crashing and people screaming implies to the viewer that because nobody can see, everything is going wrong. A short film such as this shows that extensive amounts of props, actors and money is not needed to create a hum...
