Photograph Connotation Exercise

Strength

This particular picture was taken to connote strength. A medium shot captured from a low angle, this picture creates the feeling that the audience is looking up at the subject, making him seem strong and almost as though he has power over them. Three point high key lighting has been used to highlight and brighten each aspect of the subjects face, emphasising his implied strength. Another way his strength has been emphasised is by the positioning of his head (tilted upwards, looking into the distance, slight smile) and also his arm, held on his chest to show his physical strength.

Love

This picture was taken to show love. The two subjects are laying together on the ground, one with his arm around the other. The natural lighting was found to be the most effective, highlighting the two subjects and the area around them, making the effect happy and the colours vibrant which adds to the emphasis of love.
A birds-eye view was the shot chosen as it entirely captures the two subjects, and is a type of shot which is regularly used in popular culture when capturing pictures of two lovers to show romance, for instance in film posters.

Friendship

Friendship is the main connotation of this photograph. It's an extreme long shot which includes natural lighting, and as they are the only figures in shot it makes them the main focus of the photograph. The bright colours accentuate the atmosphere of the picture, and this type of shot is commonly used in films to show friendship.

Fear

This photograph was shot at a medium low angle and is meant to connote fear. It looks as though the subject sat on the floor is looking up at the other person, and by shooting this from a low angle it creates an intimidating nature and makes the other person appear weak and scared, as though he has pushed her onto the floor and is asking her a question.

Loneliness

Loneliness has been portrayed using an extreme long shot of the girl, sat on an edge on her own.
She is looking out towards the group of people, but there is no-one around her which is a portrayal of loneliness. A good way to ensure the connotation of loneliness would have been to apply a black and white filter.
