What makes Clerks a low budget film?

Image
Elements of low budget filming that are evident in Clerks are; No special effects or editing added post filming No variation in location/setting (all filmed around a few specific areas i.e. the store or the video shop, where director Kevin Smith actually worked) Pre-existing setting No well known actors have been use Basic cut transitions Occasionally bad lighting caused by natural light (no studio lighting used) Very frequent swearing/sexual references Clerks, a 1994 black-and-white comedy written and directed by Kevin Smith, was shot for a total of $27,575, thus considering it a low budget film. Although the budget wasn't as high as some Hollywood blockbusters, I personally like the gritty, raw feel of it, and I also think that the witty back and forth dialogue and often surprisingly intellectual language more than compensate for the lack of fancy set and famous faces used. Clerks is proof that a sky-high budget is not needed to create a memorable and hum...

Evaluation of Continuity Exercise

Image
For this project, in groups we had to plan, film and edit a short film about a package exchanging possession, using a maximum of twenty shots. After discussion, my group decided that the package should be an SD card containing 'secret information', and that the exchange in possession should be from a theft. We played with the idea of making it seem humorous, maybe having a funny ending that the SD card actually contained nothing at all, but we couldn't achieve that in less than 20 shots.  The criteria required; At least two close--ups At least one extreme close-up At least two matches on action At least one eye line match At least one point of view shot A shot reverse shot sequence One camera movement  Some establishing and re-establishing shots At least one non cut transition I think we met the criteria as well as we possibly could given the amount of shots that we were allowed.  Personally I enjoyed the enti...

Photograph Connotation Exercise

Image
Strength This particular picture was taken to connote strength. A medium shot captured from a low angle, this picture creates the feeling that the audience is looking up at the subject, making him seem strong and almost as though he has power over them. Three point high key lighting has been used to highlight and brighten each aspect of the subjects face, emphasising his implied strength. Another way his strength has been emphasised is by the positioning of his head (tilted upwards, looking into the distance, slight smile) and also his arm, held on his chest to show his physical strength. Love This picture was taken to show love. The two subjects are laying together on the ground, one with his arm around the other. The natural lighting was found to be the most effective, highlighting the two subjects and the area around them, making the effect happy and the colours vibrant which adds to the emphasis of love. A birds-eye view was the shot chosen as it entirely cap...
